READERS EXPERIENCES

The medical profession does not put much value on any specific individual’s personal experience with some treatment as scientific. While it is true that controlled studies remove individual anomalies and give a more reliable view of the normal or general, it is ironic that anecdotal evidence is scoffed at while treating individuals is what medicine is all about!

In any case, our objective for Cforyourself is to provide information (the rest of the site) and a forum for individuals to share their experiences with specific diseases and Vitamin C. Your participation is encouraged. Please be assured that your identity will be kept as confidential as you wish. I was diagnosed with PCO (polycystic ovarian syndrome), which is an infertility condition. I got pregnant, which I consider very lucky, through a combination of conventional and alternative therapies. At the time I conceived I was taking about 10,000 mg of Vitamin C a day, among various other vitamins, minerals and herbs. When I realized I was pregnant two weeks later I became concerned that this high a dosage would be harmful to the baby, and I stopped taking extra Vitamin C. Then, after reading about this supposed “vitamin C rebound scurvy” I got worried that stopping my dosage so suddenly would hurt the baby. Eventually, during the pregnancy, I laid these fears to rest and starting taking 300 mg per day, then towards the end of pregnancy I was taking about 2,000 mg per day.

Let me just say that I WISH I WOULD HAVE KEPT TAKING THE C RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING AND CONTINUED THE WHOLE PREGNANCY AT ABOUT 8,000 mg. I was frustrated because the medical profession rejects all vitamin therapy and says they “do not know” what consequences of high vitamin intake can be during pregnancy. It is a fact that high vitamin A intake can be dangerous, but definitely not vitamin C.

I delivered a healthy baby boy last November, who is currently four months old and has not had a serious cold, no ear infections, no fevers, nothing. I am currently taking about 1,000 mg vitamin C and intend to the rest of my life, maybe even more. ( I think Angie means more than 1,000 mg of vitamin C per day given what she states above. Rusty)

Just a note to other women out there….there is no rebound scurvy as far as I can tell and the benefits definitely outweigh all of the consequences. Vitamin C helps your body assimilate other nutrients better during pregnancy and protects against pollutants, toxins, etc. that we are exposed to every day. It can even help with heavy metal problems that could potentially hurt the baby.

So, I guess this is my success story. I e-mailed you shortly after I found out I was pregnant and was worried about the Vitamin C high dose….you said it wouldn’t hurt and recommended I continue. I just wanted to let you know that you were right!!!

My baby boy is precious….:-)
